We will share with you some general handy tips to save money, where to get things for free (or very cheap), and other tidbits of info that will help you out tremendously when it comes to holding on to your hard-earned money. |
Fix It Yourself...And Save Money! With the rising costs everywhere in this day and age, any little avenue you can find where to save is really a big help. For the moment, we are going to discuss some easy repairs you can do around the home without the need to call a contractor. (My husband used to work for an electrical service contractor and the going rate was $95.00 the first hour and $85.00 every subsequent hour.)
Also we will throw in a few green energy saving tips that aren't overboard (on the fanatical side). These tips will hel you save money with your monthly energy expenses so you can spend your money on the things you would really like to spend it on. So, without further ado, here's our list of practical reairs, preventitive measures and green tips anyone can do: -Replace your air filters each and every year in your household. With a dirty air filter, it causes much more stress on your heating and air conditioning system. In turn this means longer running time which equates to higher energy bills for you. -If you have a scuff mark in linoleum (bathroom or kitchen floor) take either toothpaste or WD-40 and apply a dry cloth over the area and scrub it. An eraser can also do the trick too. This saves you from replacing the bathroom or kitchen floor years ahead of when you are supposed to. -If you take a tennis ball and attach it to an end of a mop or broom stick, you have one of the best floor scuff and / or scrape removers known to man. Don't ask us how...but it works and it works good. -Take a lit candle and hold it close to all the cracks in your doors and windows. Everywhere you find where the candle's flame moves away from the window (or door), you have a leak there. Go to Lowe's or Home Depot and buy window and door sealant. This will save you hundreds in your total heating and air conditioning costs. It has been said that the average home's amount of leaking cracks around it's doors and windows is the equivalent of leaving a door wide open every year (which is a home that is 100% sealed). -Run a test to your smoke detectors every 90 - 180 days. Make sure you have home owner's insurance. The last place you want to be is in a shelter because you didn't check your smoke detectors (and had no insurance to boot!) -Buy stain guard for your carpet. -If you have a deck, make it a point once a year to apply a coat of outdoor wood treatment on it. At least every other year, before you treat the wood, make sure to give it a good power wash. -Make sure to chalk your bathroom areas regularly. Chalk them immediately if notice an area of chalk that has come off. -To combat rising water bills from the utility company, displace the level of water in your toilet bowl with a one liter bottle of water. Simply place a one liter bottle filled with water inside your toilet drainage (the back of the toilet bowl), and leave it in there. Everytime the toilet flushes, it is tricked into believing there is more more water than is necessary inside of there. -Place your extension cords not in use inside a bucket. Before placing them inside the bucket, make sure they are all nicely wound up. The way I do it is by taking some electrical tape and wrapping it around it a few times. When I am almost finished with wrapping the tape around the cord, I will twist the tape itself almost into a string. This way when I go to use the cords again, I can remove the tape quickly and easily. -Repeat what I just said for all the electronics cords you have sitting around your house. If you're like me, you probably have a bucket full of A/V cords, speaker wire, HDMI cables, RGB cables, cell phone cales, iPod cobles, etc. It's time to take control of the wires scattered everywhere throughout your house and neatly wind them up so you know where all the wire (both electric and electronic) wires are whenever you need to use them. -If you have dogs, a good practice to save your couches would be to place old sheets or couch covers on them whenever you go away somewhere for a few hours. (This is for the people who refuse to place their dog in a cage for a few hours.) |
